Cardinal Oscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga, S.D.B., was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, on December 29, 1942. He was ordained a priest for the Salesians on June 28, 1970. He taught in various Salesian colleges in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. He was a professor at the Salesian Theological Institute in Guatemala, and rector of the Salesian Philosophical Institute in Guatemala. On October 28, 1978, he was appointed titular bishop of Pudentiana and auxiliary bishop of Tegucigalpa. He was appointed archbishop of Tegucigalpa on January 8, 1993. From 1995 until 1999, he served as president of CELAM. He has also served as president of the Episcopal Conference of Honduras. On February 21, 2001, he was created a cardinal. His titular church is St. Mary of Hope. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Tegucigalpa. He is a member of the Congregation for the Clergy, the Council for Justice and Peace, the Council for Social Communication, and the Commission for Latin America. |
