Cardinal Wilfred Fox Napier, O.F.M., was born in Swartberg, South Africa, on March 8, 1941. On July 25, 1970, he was ordained a priest of the Franciscan Order. In 1978, he was appointed apostolic administrator of Kokstad. He was appointed bishop of Kokstad on November 29, 1980, and consecrated on February 28, 1981. He was deeply involved in the mediation and negotiations surrounding the ending of apartheid in South Africa and subsequent South African politics. From 1987 until 1994, he was president of the Southern African Bishops' Conference. He was appointed bishop of Durban on May 29, 1992. He was apostolic administrator sede vacante et ad nutum Santae Sedis of Umzimkulu in 1994. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 2001. His titular church is St. Francis of Assisi in Acilia. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Durban. He is a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, and the Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church.
