Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez was born in Barranca, in the Dominican Republic, on October 31, 1936. He was ordained a priest on March 18, 1961, and was sent to Rome for advanced studies at the Angelicum and the Gregorian University. After returning to his home diocese of La Vega, he served in various diocesan offices. On February 25, 1978, he was ordained the first bishop of San Francisco de Macoris. He then became archbishop of Santo Domingo and the Military Ordinary for the Dominican Republic. He was created a cardinal on June 28, 1991. His titular church is St. Pius X (alla Balduina). He continues to serve as Archbishop of Santo Domingo and Military Ordinary for the Dominican Republic. He is a member of the Congregation for the Clergy, the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, the Council for Social Communications, and the Commission for Latin America. |
