Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino was born on October 18, 1936, in Jagüay Grande, Cuba. He was ordained a priest on August 2, 1964. He was detained in work camps (UMAP) from 1966 to 1967, after which, he served as a parish priest. On January 14, 1979, he was ordained bishop of Pinar del Rio. He was appointed archbishop of Havana on November 20, 1981. On November 26, 1994, he was created a cardinal. His titular church is Sts. Aquila and Priscilla. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Havana. He serves in the Congregation for the Clergy, the Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers, and the Commission for Latin America.
