Cardinal Ivan Dias was born on April 14, 1936, in Bandra, India. He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1958. He entered the Holy See diplomatic service and was posted to Indonesia, Madagascar, Reunion, the Comorros, Mauritius, and Secretariat of State. On May 8, 1982, he was appointed titular archbishop of Rusubisir and pro-nuncio in Ghana, Togo, and Benin. He was consecrated on June 19, 1982. From 1987 until 1991, he served as nuncio in Korea, and from 1991 to 1997 he was nuncio in Albania. He was appointed archbishop of Bombay on January 22, 1997, and consecrated on March 13, 1997. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 2001. His titular church is Holy Spirit in Ferratella. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Bombay. In the Roman Curia, he is a member of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Congregation for Education, the Council for Culture, and the Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church. On 20 May 2006, he was appointed Prefect of Evangelization of Peoples.
