Cardinal José da Cruz Policarpo was born on February 26, 1936, in Alvorninha, Portugal. He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1961. He served as the director of the seminary in Penafirme, and later as rector of the seminary in Olivais. He also was dean of the Theological Faculty of the Portuguese Catholic University. From 1988 until 1996, he served two terms as rector of the Portuguese Catholic University. On May 26, 1978, he was appointed titular bishop of Caliabria and auxiliary bishop of Lisbon. He was consecrated on June 29, 1978. On March 5, 1997, he was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Lisbon, and succeeded as patriarch of Lisbon on March 24, 1998. He was grand chancellor of the Portuguese Catholic University, and president of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference. On February 21, 2001, he was created a cardinal. His titular church is St. Anthony in Campo Formio. He continues to serve as Patriarch of Lisbon. He is a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education, the Council for Culture, and the Council for the Laity.
