Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi was born in Renate, Italy, on March 14, 1934. On June 28, 1957, he was ordained to the priesthood. He taught fundamental theology at the major seminary of Lower Venegono, and pastoral theology at the Priestly Institute of Mary Immaculate and at the Lombard Regional Institute of Pastoral Ministry in Milan. He also served as rector of the Pontifical Lombard Seminary in Rome. On July 1, 1989, he became archbishop of Ancona-Osimo, and resigned in 1991. From 1991 until 1995, he served as general secretary of the Italian Episcopal Conference. He became Vice-president of that conference on May 25, 1995. On April 20, 1995, he became archbishop of Genoa. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 1998. His titular church is Sts. Ambrose and Charles. On July 11, 2002, he was appointed Archbishop of Milan. He is a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregation for Catholic Education, the Congregation for Oriental Churches, the Council for Social Communications, and the Office of the Economic Affairs of the Holy See. |
