Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo was born in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, on October 19, 1933. On June 29, 1957, he was ordained a priest. He taught at the seminary of Aparecida, the Immaculate Conception Seminary, and the Pius XI Theological Institute. He was also the rector of Our Lady of the Assumption Seminary. On May 5, 1978, he became bishop of Toledo, and was consecrated on August 6, 1978. He was appointed archbishop of Londrina on October 27, 1982. He served as president of the Brazilian Bishops' Liturgical Commission. On September 16, 1991, he was appointed secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. He was appointed archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia on January 13, 1999. On February 21, 2001, he was created a cardinal, and assigned to the titular church of St. Gregory the Great in Magliana Nuova. He continues to serve as Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia. He is also a member of the Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant Peoples and the Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church. |
