Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa was born on September 5, 1933, in Santiago, Chile. He was ordained a priest for the Schönstatt Fathers on July 16, 1961. He was chaplain to the students and professionals of the Shönstatt Movement, and its regional superior. In 1974, he was elected superior general of the Schönstatt Fathers. He was appointed titular archbishop of Hólar and secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life on December 22, 1990. He was appointed archbishop of Valparaiso on September 24, 1996, and transferred to the archdiocese of Santiago on April 24, 1998. He became president of the Episcopal Conference of Chile and the first vice-president of CELAM. On February 21, 2001, he was created a cardinal. His titular church is St. Mary of Peace. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Santiago. In the Roman Curia, he is a member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, the Council for the Family, and the Commission for Latin America. |
