Cardinal Godfried Danneels was born in Kanegem, Belgium, on June 4, 1933. He was ordained a priest on August 17, 1957. From 1969 until 1977 he was a professor of liturgy and sacramental theology at the Catholic University of Louvain. He was ordained bishop of Antwerp on December 18, 1977. He was appointed archbishop of Mechelen-Brussel on December 19, 1979, and installed January 4, 1980. He was created a cardinal on February 2, 1983. His titular church is St. Anastasia. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussel and he is also the military ordinary of Belgium. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for Oriental Churches, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Congregation for Education.
