Cardinal Severino Poletto was born in Salgareda (Treviso), Italy, on March 18, 1933. He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1957. He was the prefect of discipline at the diocesan seminary and vocation director. In 1973, he founded the Diocesan Center for Family Ministry. He also coordinated the city mission for the 500th Anniversary of the foundation of the diocese of Casale Monferrato. On April 3, 1980, he was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Fossano, and consecrated on May 17, 1980. He succeeded to that see on October 29, 1980. He was appointed archbishop of Asti on March 16, 1989, and was appointed archbishop of Turin on June 19, 1999. On February 21, 2001, he was created a cardinal. His titular church is St. Joseph in Via Trionfale. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Turin. He is a member of the Congregation for the Clergy, the Office for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See, and the Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church. |
