Cardinal Lubomyr Husar was born on February 26, 1933, in Lviv, Ukraine. His family fled to Austria because of the war, and then to the U.S. He was ordained for the eparchy of Stamford for Ukrainians in the USA on March 30, 1958. After completing a doctorate in theology in Rome, he entered the order of the Studite Monks. He became the superior of the Studion in Grottaferrata, Italy. On April 2, 1977, he was ordained a bishop. He was appointed archimandrite of the Studite Monks residing outside Ukraine. In 1994, he organized a new Studite monastery in Ternopil, Ukraine. In 1995, he was elected exarch of Kyiv-Vyshorod. He was appointed auxiliary bishop to the major archbishop of Lviv in 1996, and, on January 25, 2001, he was elected major archbishop of Lviv for the Ukranians. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 2001. His titular church is Holy Wisdom in Via Boccea. On 29 August 2005, he was appointed Major Archbishop of Kyiv-Halyc {Kiev} (Ukrainian), Ukraine. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for Oriental Churches, the Council for Christian Unity, and the Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts.
