Cardinal Edward Michael Egan was born on April 2, 1932, in Oak Park, Illinois. He was ordained a priest on December 15, 1957, in Rome. From 1958 until 1960, he was secretary to Cardinal Albert Meyer, and from 1960 until 1964 he was assistant vice-rector of the North American College. He was vice-chancellor of the archdiocese of Chicago from 1964 until 1968, and co-chancellor for human relations and ecumenism from 1968 until 1972. From 1972 until 1985, he was judge of the Roman Rota. He was ordained titular bishop of Allegheny and auxiliary bishop of New York on May 22, 1985. On November 5, 1988, he was appointed bishop of Bridgeport. He was appointed archbishop of New York on May 11, 2000, and installed on June 19, 2000. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 2001. His titular church is Sts. John and Paul. He continues to serve as Archbishop of New York. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Council of the Family.
