Cardinal Adrianus Johannes Simonis was born in Lisse, Netherlands, on November 26, 1931. He was ordained a priest on June 15, 1957. On March 20, 1971, he was ordained bishop of Rotterdam. He became coadjutor archbishop of Utrecht on June 27, 1983, and succeeded to that see on December 3 of that year. On May 25, 1985, he was created a cardinal. His titular church is St. Clement. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Utrecht. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, the Congregation for Catholic Education, and the Council for Christian Unity.
