Cardinal William Henry Keeler was born on March 3l, 1931, in San Antonio, Texas. He was ordained a priest of the diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on July 17, 1955. He was secretary to Bishop Leech at the Second Vatican Council, and named peritus by Pope John XXIII. On September 21, 1979, he was ordained titular bishop of Ulcinium, Dulcigno, and auxiliary bishop of Harrisburg. He became the bishop of Harrisburg on November 10, 1983, and was installed on January 4 of 1984. On April 6, 1989, he became archbishop of Baltimore, Maryland. He was created a cardinal on November 26, 1994, Cardinal-Priest of St. Mary of the Angels. He also served as Apostolic Administrator of Richmond, Virginia, 16 September 2003 to 31 March 2004. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Baltimore. In the Roman Curia, he is a member of the Congregation for Oriental Churches and a member of the Council for Christian Unity.
