Cardinal Camillo Ruini was born on February 19, 1931, in Sassuolo, Italy. He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1954. He taught in seminaries in central Italy. On June 29, 1983, he was ordained titular bishop of Nepte and auxiliary bishop of Reggio Emilia and Guastella. From 1986 until 1991, he served as secretary general of the Italian Bishops' Conference. On January 17, 1991, he became archbishop and pro-vicar general of the Pope for the diocese of Rome. He also became pro-Archpriest of the Patriarchal Lateran Archbasilica. On June 28, 1991, he was created a cardinal. His titular church is St. Agnes Outside the Wall. On July 1, 1991, he became vicar general of the Pope for the diocese of Rome and Archpriest of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica. He is Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Lateran University. From 1992 until 1996, he served as president of Peregrinatio ad Petri Sedem. He is also a member of the Congregation of Bishops. |
