Cardinal Janis Pujats was born in the Rezekne district of Latvia on November 14, 1930. He was ordained a priest on March 29, 1951. He taught art history and liturgy at the catholic Theological Seminary in Riga. From 1979 to 1984, he was vicar general in the Metropolitan Curia in Riga. In 1984, the KGB declared him persona non grata. On May 8, 1991, he was appointed archbishop of Riga, and was consecrated on June 1, 1991. He is president of the Latvian Bishops' Conference. He was created a cardinal in pectore on February 21, 1998. His titular chuch is St. Sylvia. He is Archbishop of Riga, and a member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. |
