Cardinal Michele Giordano was born on September 26, 1930, in S. Arcangelo, Italy. He was ordained a priest on July 5, 1953. On February 5, 1972, he was ordained titular bishop of LariCastello and auxiliary bishop of Matera. From 1974 until 1987, he served as archbishop of Matera and Irsina. He became the bishop of Naples on May 9, 1987. He was created a cardinal on June 28, 1988, and appointed Cardinal-Priest of St. Joachim. He retired as Archbishop of Naples, 20 May 2006. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for the Clergy and the Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers.
