Cardinal Aloysius M. Ambrozic, born on January 27, 1930 in Gabrje, Slovenia, emigrated to Austria in 1945 and to Canada in 1948. He was ordained a priest on June 4, 1955. From 1960 until 1967, he taught Scripture at St. Augustine's Seminary. He also taught New Testament exegesis at the Toronto School of Theology from 1970 until 1976. On March 26, 1976, he became the auxiliary bishop of Toronto. He became co-adjuter of Toronto on May 22, 1986, and archbishop of Toronto on March 17, 1990. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 1998. His titular church is Sts. Marcellinus and Peter. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for Oriental Churches, the Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Congregation for the Clergy, the Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, and the Pontifical Council for Culture. Retired as Archbishop of Toronto, 16 December 2006.
