Cardinal Józef Glemp was born on December 18, 1929, in Inowroclaw, Poland. During the Nazi occupation, he was assigned to forced labor on a German farm in Rycerzow. He was ordained a priest on May 25, 1956. He studied in Rome from 1958 until 1964 and received a degree in Roman and canon law from the Pontifical Lateran University. On his return to Poland in 1964, he became secretary of the primatial major seminary at Gniezno. He was a spokesman for the secretariat of the primate of Poland and chaplain for the primate of the archdiocese of Gniezno in 1967. On April 21, 1979, he was ordained bishop op Warmia. He was archbishop of Gniezno from 1981 until 1992, with the personal title of archbishop of Warsaw and primate of Poland. He was created a cardinal on February 2, 1983. His titular church is St. Mary in Trastevere. On March 25, 1992, he became archbishop of Warsaw, primate of Poland, and the ordinary for the Eastern-Rite faithful in Poland who do not have ordinaries of their own rites. In the Roman Curia, he is a member of the Congregation for Oriental Churches and a member of the Council for Culture. On 6 December 2006, he retired as Archbishop of Warsaw, but was Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese from 6 January to 3 March 2007. |
