Cardinal Peter Seiichi Shirayanagi was born in Hachioji City, Japan, on June 17, 1928. He was ordained a priest on December 21, 1954. On May 8, 1966, he was ordained titular bishop of Atenia and auxiliary bishop of Tokyo. On November 15, 1969, he became titular archbishop of Castro and coadjutor archbishop of Tokyo. He succeeded to that see on February 21, 1970. He was created a cardinal on November 26, 1994. His titular church is St. Emerentiana in Tor Fiorenza. He is now Archbishop emeritus of Tokyo, as he resigned on June 12, 2000. He is a member of the Pontifical Council for the Family and the Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church.
