Cardinal Edmund Casimir Szoka was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on September 14, 1927. He was ordained a priest of the Marquette diocese on June 5, 1954. On July 20, 1971, he was ordained the first bishop of Gaylord, Michigan. From 1981 until 1990, he was archbishop of Detroit. He was created a cardinal on June 28, 1988. His titular church is Sts. Andrew and Gregory (al Monte Celio). From 1990 until 1997, he served as president of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See. Since 1997, he is President emeritus of the Pontificial Commission for Vatican City State. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation of Bishops, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the Congregation for the Clergy, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, and the Congregation for Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
