Cardinal William Wakefield Baum was born on November 21, 1926, in Dallas, Texas. At an early age he moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He was ordained a priest in Kansas City, of the diocese of St. Joseph, on May 12, 1951. From 1964 to 1969, he served as executive director of the U.S. Bishops Commission for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs. He attended the Second Vatican Council as a peritus (expert adviser). On April 6, 1970, he was ordained bishop of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He served as archbishop of Washington, D.C. from 1973 until 1980. He was created a cardinal on May 24, 1976. Holy Cross on the Via Flaminia is his titular church. From 1980 to 1990, he served as prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education (Seminaries and Institutes of Study). From 1990 to 2001, he was Major Penitentiary. He resigned on November 22, 2001. In the Roman Curia, he is a member of the Congregation for the Bishops, the Congregation for Oriental Churches, the Congregation for Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, and the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. He also serves in the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See. |
