Cardinal Ricardo Maria Carles Gordó was born on September 24, 1926, in Valencia, Spain. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 29, 1951. On August 3, 1969, he was ordained bishop of Tortosa. He became archbishop of Barcelona on May 23, 1990. He was created a cardinal on November 26, 1994. His titular church is St. Mary of Consolation in Tiburtino. He retired as Archbishop of Barcelona on 15 June 2004. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for Catholic Education and the Office of the Economic Affairs of the Holy See.
