Cardinal Marian Jaworski was born on August 21, 1926, in Lwów, Poland (modern day Lviv, Ukraine). He was ordained a priest on June 25, 1950. He taught at the Catholic Theological Academy of Warsaw and the Pontifical Theological faculty of Kraków. He was the first rector of the Pontifical Theological Academy in Kraków from 1981 until 1987. On May 21, 1984, he was appointed titular bishop of Lambaesis and apostolic administrator of Lubaczów, and consecrated on June 23, 1984. He was appointed archbishop of Lviv for the Latins on January 16, 1991. In 1992, he became president of the Ukrainian Episcopal Conference. On February 21, 1998, he was created a cardinal (in pectore). On 21 February 2001, his elevation to cardinal was made public. His titular church is St. Sixtus. He continues to serve as archbishop of Lviv for the Latins. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for the Clergy and the Council for the Family. |
