Cardinal Desmond Connell was born on March 24, 1926, in Phibsboro, Ireland. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 19, 1951. From 1953 until 1972, he taught at the University College in Dublin. In 1983, he became dean of the faculty of Philosophy and Sociology. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters by the National University of Dublin in 1981. He served as chaplain for the Poor Clares in Donnybrook and also for the Carmelites in Drumcondra and Blackrock. On January 21, 1988, he was appointed archbishop of Dublin, and consecrated on March 6, 1988. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 2001. His titular church is St. Sylvester in Capite. He retired as Archbishop of Dublin, 26 April 2004. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregation for the Bishops, and the Council for the Laity.
