Cardinal Bernard Agré was born on March 2, 1926, in Monga, Ivory Coast, and was ordained a priest on July 20, 1953. He was the headmaster in Dabou, and the vicar general of the Abidjan archdiocese. He was appointed bishop of Man on June 8, 1968, and appointed the first bishop of Yamoussourkro on March 6, 1992. On December 19, 1994, he was appointed archbishop of Abidjan. He is president of the Episcopal Conferences of Francophone West Africa (CERAO) and chair of the Pan-African Episcopal Commitee for Social Communications (CEPACS). He was created a cardinal on February 21, 2001, his titular church being St. John Chrysostom in Monte Sacro Alto. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation of the Evangelization of Peoples, the Council of Justice and Peace, the Council of the Family, and the Council of Social Communications. On 2 May 2006, he retired as Archbishop of Abidjan.
