Cardinal José Freire Falcão was born on October 23, 1925, in Erere, Brazil. He was ordained a priest on June 19, 1949. On June 17, 1967, he was ordained titular bishop of Vardimissa and coadjutor bishop of Limoeiro do Norte. On August 19, 1967, he became bishop of Limoeiro do Norte. He became archbishop of Teresina on November 25, 1971, and archbishop of Brasilia on February 15, 1984. He was created a cardinal on June 28, 1988. His titular church is St. Luke (a Via Prenestina). He continues to serve as Archbishop of Brasilia. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers. On 28 January 2004, the Holy Father accepted his resignation as Archbishop of Brasília, due to age. |
