Cardinal Marco Cé was born on July 8, 1925, in Izano, Italy. He was ordained a priest on March 27, 1948. Beginning in 1957, in his home diocese of Crema, he taught sacred scripture and dogmatic theology at the local seminary. He also presided over the diocesan liturgical commission, and preached at youth retreats. On May 17, 1970, he was ordained titular bishop of Vulturia. From 1970 until 1976, he served as auxiliary bishop of Bologna. From 1976 until 1978, he was the general ecclesiastical assistant of Italian Catholic Action. He served as Patriarch of Venice from 1978 to 2001, and retired on January 5, 2002. He was created a cardinal on June 30, 1979. St. Mark is his titular church. He is Patriarch emeritus of Venice. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for Oriental Churches.
