Cardinal Walter Kasper was born on March 5, 1933, in Heidenheim/Brenz, Germany. He was ordained a priest on April 6, 1957. He taught theology and was later dean of the theological faculty in Münster and Tübingen. He was appointed bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart on April 17, 1989, and consecrated on June 17 of that year. In 1994, he began serving as co-chair of the International Commission for Lutheran/Catholic Dialogue. On June 1, 1999, he became secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, He then became this council's president in 2001. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 2001, holding the title of Deacon of All Saints in Via Appia Nuova. He continues to serve as President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregation for Oriental Churches and the Council for Culture.
