Cardinal James Francis Stafford was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 26, 1932. He was ordained a priest on December 15, 1957. He was ordained titular bishop of Respetta and auxiliary bishop of Baltimore on February 29, 1976. On November 17, 1982, he was appointed bishop of Memphis, Tennessee. He was appointed archbishop of Denver, Colorado, on June 3, 1986, and was installed on July 30 of that year. On August 20, 1996, he was appointed President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 1998. His titular church is Jesus, the Good Shepherd at Montagnola. He continues to serve as President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. He is also a member of the Congregation of Bishops, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and the Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts. From 2003 to 2009, he was Major Penitentiary of Apostolic Penitentiary of the Roman Curia. |
