Cardinal Darío Castillón Hoyos was born on July 4, 1929, in Medelliín, Colombia. He was ordained a priest on October 26, 1952. He served as curate in two parishes, and also as director of the local Cursillo Movement. He was a delegate for Catholic Action, and taught Canon Law at the Free Civil University. He also served as general secretary of the Colombian Bishops' Conference. On June 2, 1971, he became coadjutor bishop of Pereira. From 1976 until 1992 he served as bishop of Pereira. From 1983 until 1987 he was general secretary of the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM). He became archbishop of Bucaramango in 1992, serving in that capacity until 1996. From 1996 until 1998, he was pro-prefect for the Congregation for the Clergy, and he became the Congregation's prefect in 1998. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 1998, becoming titular Deacon of Holy Name of Mary on the Forum Traiani. On 14 April 2000, he was appointed President of Ecclesia Dei, where he continues to serve. He retired as Prefect for the Congregation for the Clergy, 31 October 2006. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for the Bishops, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, the Congregation for Education, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Council for Social Communications, the Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts, the Office of the Administration for the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, and the Commission for Latin America. Retired as President of Ecclesia Dei, 8 July 2009. |
