Cardinal Ignace Moussa I Daoud was born in Meskaneh, Syria, on September 18, 1930. He was ordained a priest on October 17, 1954. On July 2, 1977, he was elected bishop of Cairo, Egypt, by the Syrian Patriarchal Synod, and was consecrated on September 18, 1977. He was a member of the commission for the revision of the Eastern Code of Canon Law and he chaired the commission that translated the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches into Arabic. On July 6, 1994, he was promoted archbishop of Homs for the Syrians in Syria. He was elected Patriarch of Antioch for the Syrians on October 13, 1998. On November 25, 2000, he was appointed prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. He was created a cardinal on February 21, 2001. He was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, 25 November 2000, from which he retired, 9 June 2007. He has also served as a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the Council for Christian Unity, and the Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts. |
