Holy Father visits the Western Wall and prays for forgiveness

On Sunday morning, 26 March, the Holy Father visited the Western or "Wailing" Wall in Jerusalem, where he paused in prayer and left a written message imploring God's forgiveness for those who have caused the children of Abraham to suffer. Here is the English text of the Pope's message.

God of our fathers, you chose Abraham and his descendants to bring Your name to the nations... We are deeply saddened by the behavior of those who in the course of history have caused these children of Yours to suffer and, asking Your forgiveness, we wish to commit ourselves to genuine brotherhood with the people of the Covenant.

Jerusalem, 26 March 2000.

John Paul II
