PAPAL VISIT SCHEDULE
( EWTNews) Beginning Monday, Pope John Paul
II will make his second pilgrimage to the Middle East. Thirty-six
years ago, as a young archbishop from Poland, the Holy Father
journeyed with other bishops to the Holy Land, a 10-day visit that
left him in awe over "places that are the most sacred in this
world."
The first stop of the Pope’s visit is
Amman, Jordon. In preparation, city workers in Amman have hung
flags and banners in the yellow and white Papal colors to welcome
the Holy Father. One banner reads "Jordan loves the
Pope."
The working schedule for the Papal visit to
the Holy Land:
Monday, March 20
Amman, Jordan: Welcome ceremony; private
visit to Franciscan monastery on Mount Nebo, the place from which
Moses saw the Promised Land, and visit with King Abdullah of
Jordan.
Tuesday, March 21
* Amman: Mass in stadium; meeting with patriarch and bishops of
Amman; visit to Wadi-al-Kharrar in the Jordan Valley.
Archaeologists now believe this is the spot where Jesus was
baptized.
* Tel Aviv: Welcome ceremony
* Jerusalem: Arrival
Wednesday, March 22
* Bethlehem: Mass in Manger Square in front
of the Basilica of the Nativity; private visit to the Grotto of
the Nativity; visit with Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestinian
National Authority; visit to the Palestinian refugee camp of
Deheisha; return to Jerusalem.
Thursday, March 23
* Jerusalem: Mass in private in the chapel
of the Cenacle in Jerusalem, where Jesus is said to have eaten the
Last Supper. Visit with the two chief rabbis of Israel; visit with
Israeli President Ezer Weizman; visit to the Holocaust memorial;
interreligious meeting.
Friday, March 24
* Korazim: Mass for youth at a modern
hostel, called Domus Galilaeae, near the Mount of the Beatitudes,
site of the Sermon on the Mount; meeting with Prime Minister Ehud
Barak.
* Tabgha: Private visit to the Church of the
Multiplication of the Loaves; private visit to the Church of St.
Peter's Primacy; return to Jerusalem.
Saturday, March 25
* Nazareth: Prayer in the Grotto of the
Annunciation; Mass in the Basilica of the Annunciation.
* Jerusalem: Private visit to the Basilica
of the Garden of Gethsemane (below), where Jesus is said to have
agonized on the eve of his arrest; meeting with Greek Orthodox
patriarchs and bishops.
Sunday, March 26
* Jerusalem: Private visit to the Basilica
of the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus is said to have agonized
on the eve of his arrest; meeting with Greek Orthodox patriarchs
and bishops.
* Mass in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher,
commemorating Jesus's crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection;
meeting with patriarchs and bishops in the Latin Patriarchate of
Jerusalem; farewell ceremony in Tel Aviv; return to Rome.
