WELCOMING WORDS TO THE HOLY FATHER AT THE CELEBRATION DURING THE ENCOUNTER WITH THE WORLD OF SUFFERING, January 24, 1998

SANCTUARY OF SAINT LAZARUS AT EL RINCÓN, HAVANA

Holy Father,

"BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!"

With these words from the Gospel we want to greet you and to thank God, comfort and strength of those who suffer, for your appreciated visit to the ill people gathered here.

They manifest the world of suffering, that multiple and frequently mysterious reality of pain. They stand for many other brothers and sisters who suffer on account of disease, or of the material and spiritual scarcities which so often plague the life of human beings. We do not forget at this time those who suffer in prison, or because of the lack of a proper place to live, or because of the lack of understanding, either within the family or in society.

We know how close, in affection and understanding, Your Holiness is to all these people. Yourself, who by indecipherable designs, have been tried throughout your life by the effects of violence and illness.

Your apostolic ministry, Your Holiness, has taken you along the roads of the world as the Good Samaritan of modern times, relieving grief and encouraging hope. God’s Providence has brought you today to this sanctuary, which attracts a widely extended and deeply rooted devotion to Cubans. With their hearts open to your kindness as the Universal Pastor of the Church, in the name of the patients, the religious serving this institution, the authorities and the health workers, the followers of Saint Lazarus, in the name of our people, I bid you our most warmhearted welcome. We are all eagerly awaiting your words.
