The Night is Far Spent Narnia and C.S. Lewis Dove Descending
Dr. Thomas Howard
Three of Dr. Tom Howard’s books are highlighted in this half-hour Bookmark episode, but the topic is really how this English professor and convert to Catholicism (as a middle-aged Anglican), came to be an author. The Night is far Spent should not be missed, Doug reflects, for its collection of essays on everything from Beowulf to T.S. Eliot. Dove Descending is devoted to Eliot’s Four Quartets, and Narnia and Beyond, obviously, is a guide to the amazing world of C.S. Lewis. |

The Fatima Guide: the Essential companion for English-Speaking Pilgrims
Leo Madigan
“Fatima, to me,” author Leo Madigan shares with Bookmark host Doug Keck, “is the spiritual center of the world.” When Leo arrived in Fatima a number of years ago, he could find no guidebooks to this fascinating and holy spot in Portugal for the English-speaking visitor, and so decided to write one. The resulting Fatima Guide, Doug observes, is compactly carried, and yet has everything: a brief history of the Shrine, the story of the three shepherd children and the miracles of Our Lady of Fatima, sites next to the Basilica, and maps, nearby attractions, and even advice, e.g., “beware of pickpockets!” Leo Madigan’s talents as storyteller and author are evident from this all-too-quickly-over interview.

Good News, Bad News: Evangelization, Conversion, and the Crisis of Faith
Russell Shaw and Fr. C. John McCloskey
“What lay people ought to be doing out in the world,” Doug Keck remarks to author Russell Shaw, “is living and treating people outside the Church, with a difference.” This, Shaw and his co-author Fr. C. John McCloskey have done, and continue to do, and now share in Good News, Bad News: Evangelization, Conversion, and the Crisis of Faith. The growing trend in Catholic conversions reflects the longing of the human heart for truth and certainty, and also reflects the impact of apostolic Catholics who love their faith and are eager to bring others to it. Get a taste of Shaw and Fr. McCloskey’s approach in this week’s engaging Bookmark interview. |

Understanding the Mystery of the Mass
Fr. Matt Buettner
Fr. Matthew Buettner’s new book on the Mass should be subtitled, “If you know the gift of God,” host Doug Keck declares, “because its raison d’etre is to make Catholics aware of the inestimable gift Christ gives us in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.” Doug’s interview with Fr. Buettner on Understanding the Mystery of the Mass awakens, or reawakens, our gratitude for what takes place during the Mass, and the earth-shaking significance it will have on our lives, if we are properly prepared to receive this grace.
