ARGENTINA: 400.000 GATHER IN CELEBRATION TO PREPARE JUBILEE
Buenos Aires, 20 (NE) Thousands of Argentinean faithful gathered this weekend at Buenos
Aires famous Obelisk to celebrate in a true feast of faith the "Christmas of the Millennium."
Official sources calculated that more than 400,000 people assisted to the event, held last
Saturday in preparation for the beginning of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000.
The Eucharist celebration was presided by Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires.
President Fernando de la Rua, among several authorities, attended the event, together with
faithful from different parts of the country. Hundreds of priests arrived early in the afternoon to
confess the multitude, that greatly attended the Sacrament of Reconciliation, as an immediate
preparation for the celebration of the Holy Year.
Only if we let Jesus "be with us, as Mary and Joseph did, a culture of encounter becomes
possible, in which nobody is excluded, in which all of us look at each other as brothers," recalled
Archbishop Bergoglio during his homily. "Two thousand Christmases, and the Child is not
deceived from the faithful, from us," stated as well the Prelate. "He still gives Himself to us,
putting Himself in our hands, in this act of self donation that is the Eucharist."
