Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo Jung was born on 5 December 1943 in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. He was the fifth child born into a family which had been Catholic for five generations. When his mother was pregnant with him, she prayed secretly to the Virgin Mary, "If the child is a boy, let him be a priest; if the child is a girl, a sister." Her prayers were answered on 8 December 1970, when he was ordained a priest. Soon after he began serving in parish ministry. He was appointed secretary general of the Archdiocese of Seoul. On 25 January 2002 he was ordained a bishop, subsequent to his appointment as titular Bishop of Thibiuca and Auxiliary of Seoul. He then began serving as Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Seoul. There he devoted himself to leading diocesan affairs and helped to improve the Diocesan Synod. He also dedicated himself in a speeial way to the pro-life movement. Through the archdiocese's Committee for Life, he took part in several social and academic activities for protesting abortion, human cloning, and suicide. He has also served as chairman of the One Body One Spirit Foundation and the Ong-gi Scholarship. On 10 May 2012 he was appointed Archbishop of Seoul.
