Cardinal Elio Sgreccia was born, 6 June 1928, in Arcevia, Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood 29 June 1952, and served as rector of the local seminary. On 5 November 1992, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Zama Minor and Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family. He was ordained a Bishop on 6 January 1993. On 3 April 1996, he resigned as Secretary of the Council for the Family. He was appointed President of the Pontifical Academy for Life on 3 January 2005, serving until 17 June 2008. He is an expert in bioethics, and has written many books on the subject. He is currently serving as President of the International Federation of Bioethics Centers. He was elevated to Cardinal on 20 November 2010.
