Cardinal Josť Estepa Llaurens was born, 1 January 1926, in Andķjar, Spain. He studied in Salamance, Rome, and Paris, and was ordained to the priesthood 27 June 1954, to serve in Madrid. On 5 September 1972, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Madrid and Titular Bishop of Tisili. He was ordained Bishop on 15 October 1972. He served for 11 years as rector of the archdiocesan seminary. On 30 July 1983, he was appointed Archbishop of the Military Ordinariate for Spain, and Titular Archbishop of Velebusdus. He was appointed Titular Archbishop of Italica on 18 November 1989, and resigned that post on 7 March 1998. On 30 October 2003, he retired as Archbishop of Spainís Military Ordinariate, but continues to serve as chaplain to retired Spanish veterans and is Grand Prio of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre in western Spain. He has served as a consultant and member of the Congregation for Clergy, and as a member of the Council of Military Ordinaries under the Congregation for Bishops. On 20 November 2010, he was elevated to Cardinal.
