Cardinal Paolo Romeo was born, 20 February 1938, in Acireale, Italy. After studying at the Arcireale seminary, he studied in Rome where he earned degrees in theology and canon law. He was ordained to the priesthood on 18 March 1961 and, after studying at the Vatican’s diplomatic academy, he entered the diplomatic corps in 1967. Over the next nine years, he worked at Vatican embassies in the Philippines, Venezuela, Rwanda, and Burundi. He joined the Vatican Secretariat of State in 1976, focusing on Latin America. On 17 December 1983, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti and Titular Archbishop of Vulturia. He was ordained Bishop on 6 January 1984. On 24 April 1990, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Columbia, and on 5 February 1999, Apostolic Nuncio to Canada. He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Italy, and to San Marino, on 17 April 2001. On 19 December 2006, he was appointed Archbishop of Palermo and installed 10 February 2007. On 20 November 2010, he was elevated to Cardinal.
