John Njue was born in 1944 in Embu, Kenya. He was ordained a priest on 6 January 1973, to serve in Embu. Professor of philosophy at the National Seminary of Bungoma, diocese of Kakmega, 1975; later, its vice-rector; and finally, its rector. He was also Rector of the Philosophical Seminary of Meru, in Nairobi. On 9 June 1986, he was appointed Bishop of Embu and ordained a Bishop on 20 September 1986. On 9 March 2002, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Nyeri, Kenya. On 6 October 2007, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Nairobi, Kenya and installed on 1 November 2007. He was elevated to Cardinal, 24 November 2007, by Pope Benedict XVI.
