Odilo Pedro Scherer was born on 21 September 1949 in São Francisco, Brazil. He was ordained a priest on 7 December 1976, to serve in Toledo, Parana, Brazil. Professor of philosophy at the State University Center of Toledo; and director and professor of theology at the Interdiocesan Theological Center of Cascavel. From 1994 to 2001, he was an official of the Congregation for Bishops. On 28 November 2001, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of São Paulo, Brazil, and on the same date Titular Bishop of Novi. He was ordained Bishop on 2 February 2002, and installed as Auxiliary Bishop of São Paulo on 9 March 2002. On 21 March 2007, he was appointed Archbishop of São Paulo, and installed on 29 April 2007. He was elevated to Cardinal, 24 November 2007, by Pope Benedict XVI.
