Raffaele Farina, S.D.B., was born 24 September 1933, in Buonalbergo, Italy. He was professed as a member of the Salesians of St. John Bosco in 25 September 1954 and ordained a priest of the Order on 1 July 1958. On 25 May 1997, he was appointed Prefect of the Vatican Library. On 15 November 2006, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Opitigergium and was ordained Bishop on 16 December 2006. On 25 June 2007, he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Opitigergium, and on the same day he was appointed Librarian of the Vatican Library and Archivist of the Vatican Secret Archives. He was elevated to Cardinal, 24 November 2007, by Pope Benedict XVI. On 9 June 2012, he retired as Archivist of the Secret Archives.
