Joseph Zen Ze-kium was born in Shanghai on 13 January 1932. He was ordained a priest of the Salesians of Saint John Bosco on 11 February 1961. In 1996 he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Hong Kong, China, then installed as Bishop 20 October 2002. He was elevated to Cardinal on 24 March 2006. He is Cardinal-Priest of S. Maria Madre del Redentore a Tor Bella Monaca. He retired as Bishop of Hong Kong on 15 April 2009.
