Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako was born on February 27, 1941, in Sudan. He has done much for the people of his country to fight hunger, support health care and education, and work against the discrimination of the country's Christian population by the Islamic regime. Recently, he has been trying to establish a Catholic university in Sudan. On October 21, 2003, he was created a cardinal priest, and assigned the titular church of St. Athanasius in Via Tiburtina. He is Archbishop of Khartoum, Sudan.
