Cardinal Bernard Panafieu was born on January 26, 1931, in Chatellerault, France. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1956. He is president of the French bishops' commission on relations with Islam. He was created a cardinal priest on October 21, 2003, and assigned the titular church of St. Gregory Barbarigo alle Tre Fontane. He served as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Marseilles, France, from 22 April 1995 until 12 May 2006.
