Cardinal Renato Raffaele Martino was born in Italy on November 23, 1932. For 15 years, he served as the Holy See's permanent observer at the United Natons. In 1994, he led a papal delegation to the Cairo Conference on Population and Development. He has been active with the Angelo Roncalli International Committee. After his involvement with the United Nations, he returned to Rome to head the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, 1 October 2002. On October 21, 2003, he was created a cardinal. He is titular Deacon of St. Francis of Paola ai Monti. On 11 March 2006, he was appointed President of Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant Peoples, from which office he retired on 28 February 2009. He retired as President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace on 24 October 2009.
