Cardinal Julius Riyadi Darmaatmadja, S.J., was born on December 20, 1934, in Muntilan, Mageland, in Central Java, Indonesia. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1957, and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1969. On June 29, 1983, he was ordained bishop of Semarang, and transferred to Jakarta on January 11, 1996. He was created a cardinal on November 26, 1994. His titular church is Sacred Heart of Mary. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Jakarta, and he was the military ordinary of Indonesia from 1984 to 2006. In the Roman Curia, he serves in the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Council for Interreligious Dialogue.
